LASIK vs SMILE vs PRK: Understanding Your Vision Correction Options

Laser vision correction is not a single procedure. This guide explains how three approaches differ and why an individual evaluation matters.

Why compare different laser procedures?

LASIK, SMILE and PRK are different ways of reshaping the cornea to reduce certain refractive errors. They may reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses for suitable adults, but no procedure is ideal for everyone. A detailed examination of prescription stability, corneal shape and thickness, tear film and overall eye health helps an ophthalmologist assess the options.

What happens during LASIK?

Conventional LASIK creates a thin corneal flap, reshapes tissue beneath it using an excimer laser, and repositions the flap. Because there is a flap, patients receive specific advice to avoid rubbing or injuring the eye while it heals. Recovery patterns and possible side effects differ between people.

How is SMILE different?

SMILE uses a femtosecond laser to create a small lens-shaped piece of tissue, or lenticule, within the cornea. The surgeon removes it through a small incision instead of creating the broad flap used in conventional LASIK. Suitability depends on the type and degree of refractive error, corneal measurements and clinical findings.

How does PRK work?

PRK is a surface laser procedure. The outermost corneal layer is removed or displaced, after which a laser reshapes the underlying surface. The surface needs time to heal, so discomfort and early visual recovery can differ from those after LASIK or SMILE. The doctor may consider PRK for selected eyes after reviewing corneal characteristics.

Is any one option automatically safer or better?

No. The answer depends on the individual. Higher spectacle power, dry-eye concerns, corneal abnormalities, prior eye problems and lifestyle factors can influence the assessment. A person with keratoconus, for example, is generally not a candidate for routine corneal laser vision correction. All procedures have potential risks and limitations, and wearing glasses can remain the most appropriate option.

What to ask at a vision-correction consultation

Ask which procedures are suitable for your cornea, what realistic visual outcome to expect, what follow-up is needed and how your work or sports activities affect recovery planning. Shanti EyeTech’s Freedom From Glasses page describes LASIK, SMILE and PRK as options to discuss; the clinic should confirm which methods it currently performs in-house before a patient books a specific procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Is SMILE the same as LASIK?

No. Both are laser vision-correction methods, but they use different surgical approaches.

Which has the fastest recovery?

Recovery differs by technique and individual. Your surgeon should discuss the likely course for the option suitable for your eyes.

Can someone with thin corneas choose PRK?

Sometimes an ophthalmologist may consider a surface procedure, but corneal thickness alone does not determine eligibility.

If you have questions about your vision or are considering an eye examination, contact Shanti EyeTech in Indore to discuss an appropriate evaluation. A consultation and examination are needed before any diagnosis or treatment decision.
