Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60, but it can occur at any age. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent vision loss.
  1. Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma:
    • The most common type, where the drainage angle formed by the cornea and iris remains open, but the trabecular meshwork is partially blocked, causing a gradual increase in eye pressure.
    • Symptoms: Often asymptomatic in the early stages; gradual loss of peripheral vision
  2. Angle-Closure Glaucoma:
    • Occurs when the iris bulges forward to narrow or block the drainage angle. This can result in a sudden increase in eye pressure.
    • Symptoms: Severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and halos around lights. Requires immediate medical attention.
  3. Normal-Tension Glaucoma:
    • Optic nerve damage occurs even though eye pressure is within the normal range. The exact cause is unknown but may be related to a fragile optic nerve or reduced blood flow to the optic nerve.
    • Symptoms: Similar to primary open-angle glaucoma, with gradual vision loss.
  4. Congenital Glaucoma:
    • Description: A rare form that is present at birth, caused by an abnormal development of the eye's drainage system.
    • Symptoms: v
  • Age: Increased risk as you age.
  • Family History:Higher risk if glaucoma runs in the family.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease can increase the risk.
  • Eye Conditions: Severe myopia (near-sightedness) can increase the risk.
  • Injury: Previous eye injuries can increase the risk of glaucoma
  • Medications: Use of steroid eye drops for long term can increase the risk.
  • Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: It is known as Silent Thief of Sight as most of the time there are no symptoms in early stage. Gradual loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision in advanced stages.
  • Acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma: Severe headache, eye pain, nausea, blurred vision, halos around lights, and eye redness.
Glaucoma is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination, which may include:
  • Tonometry: Measures the pressure inside the eye.
  • Ophthalmoscopy: Examines the shape and colour of the optic nerve.
  • Tonometry: Measures the pressure inside the eye.
  • Perimetry: Tests the complete field of vision.
  • Gonioscopy: nspects the drainage angle of the eye.
  • Pachymetry: Measures the thickness of the cornea.
  1. Medications:
    • Eye drops or oral medications to reduce eye pressure by decreasing fluid production or improving drainage.
  2. Laser Therapy:
    • Trabeculoplasty: Opens the drainage angle for better fluid outflow.
    • Iridotomy: Creates a tiny hole in the iris to improve fluid flow.
  3. Surgery:
    • Trabeculectomy: Creates a new drainage path for fluid.
    • Glaucoma Drainage Devices: Implants that help drain excess fluid.
    • Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): Newer techniques that require less recovery time.
  • Regular Eye Exams: Early detection is crucial. Regular comprehensive eye exams can help catch glaucoma early, especially if you are at high risk.
  • Medication Adherence: If prescribed, use glaucoma medications exactly as directed to control eye pressure.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and managing chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
